Shauna and Peter's RTW
Bangkok, Thailand
Just a qucik-ish update from Bangkok. We were sad to leave India, everyone on our group was so lovely, but we met up with two of them (Rob and Beth) in Bangkok yesterday. It was my birthday on the 4th and Beth's on the 5th, so we went to a posh restaurant in the Lebua State tower with views all over Bangkok, to celebrate. They had a sky bar with cool views.
The overnight train back to Delhi was really cool, we had a three tiered carriage, and the beds were surprisingly comfortable (apart from the cockroaches crawling all over them). We had a couple from Denmark, Gert and Lis, on our group. They were both around 60 and retired, but they were people after Nanny's heart, and as active as could be. They had been sponsoring an orphan child in Varanasi in India for 18 years. Our guide took them to the orphanage to see if they could track her down, and we all couldn't believe it when they did. She is 24 years old now, and is working as a nurse. They got quite emotional when they met her, but it made such a good ending for our trip and we were all so happy for them, as they were the nicest couple you could meet.(Gert is a retired doctor, and looked after me when I got sick on day 5!)
We also went to see a Bollywood movie! It was called Jodhaa Akbar and it was sooo good! It was 3.5 hours long and all in Hindi though..but being a film geek, I didn't mind! The cinema was like an airport terminal, and our guide was telling us " this is much better than the cinemas in your country" - No sweet popcorn though! I miss India actually, so I can't wait to send some photos.
We arrived it Hong Kong and it was just as good as I remember it 5 years ago. We walked everywhere, and got on the train, tram, ferry, taxi....I was so kanckered after! Shanghai was crazy, the people don't speak English (not that they should!) The signs aren't in English, and its not as if you can hesitate a guess at anything! We stayed in a hostel apartment, but it was amazing! I wish all hostells were the same! We had views over the Pearl tower, so we were v.happy. The people are quite difficult... We got talking to an English guy and he told us that if you live in a country where there are so many people, you have to push and shove your way in life to get everywhere...and that's exactly what they do. I have a bruise from being shoved into a metal pole, and someone even knocked my glasses off. So it can get a bit annoying and you have to have a lot of patience to do anything/get anywhere in China!! But that's what travelling is all about. =)
I was so excited about Tokyo as I've always wanted to go there. It was soo good. The women are soo beautiful here, they all dress like they're going for dinner at the Ritz and everyone is much more relaxed. I must mention the toilet in our room. It has about 12 buttons and more functions than we've dared to test out! You can have a toilet shower, bidet, a seat temp of low or high, and you can even make a 'FAKE flushing toilet sound' ?? I have absolutely no ideas why?? Any takers? The first day here, we went on a cherry blossom picnic and apparently we were very lucky to arrive at the time we did, as the cherry blossom only lasts a week. We visited Harajuku to see the gothic kids and it was such a nice atmosphere in the park, everyone was chilling drinking beer on blankets on the ground and listening to music. On our final day, we decided to go to mount Fuji, I didn't really know what to expect, but we got the bus up there and it was amazing. It was the clearest day ever with blue skies and no clouds and we walked round the lakes in front of it which had such great views, it was a brilliant day.
6 hour flight to Bangkok, and it was crazy to arrive into such heat coming from Tokoy. It is crazily humid here, its almost unbearable, but there was rain over night yesterday, so that's cleared it away a bit. We met up with Rob and Beth who we met in India yesterday and went for our meal, then today they've left for New Zealand and we'll be leaving for Australia in about 2 hours! I was there four years ago, the day after the tsunami, so it was pretty crowded and I'm not sure what the weathers supposed to be like at the mo. Can't wait to go back to Bondi though! Update soon...xoxox
