So... Here we go again, this time. Kenya....
We left on Good friday for Tororo, and there we spent two nights. It was really nice, and almost like a different country because the level of English they spoke was incredible... better than Kampala. We also managed to climb Tororo rock which sticks out 500m above Tororo itself which made for a nice climb; up until the part where a security guard (May i add he was topless which made it hard to take him seriously) decided to pretend he was part of the Uganda Wildlife authority and Charge us 10,000/= as a guide of which he did nothing... (For the record, the Uganda shilling is just under 1 quid = 4000/=)
In Tororo we then decided to be Ugandan... and what we've realised is almost every bus journey we go on, there's 1 man that decides that they're going to take a Chicken over the border.... This time, it was us. It was a bit of a nightmare when it kept pooing all over the accomodation room but after finally realising the trick (Sticking it in a plastic bag), it was no problem and as soon as we reached Eldoret, on Easter Sunday, we gave it to a restaurant to pluck and cook for us which made for a pleasent Easter Sunday meal :)
The next day, the only reason Eldoret made it as part of our travel plan was because there was a cheese factory! Yes, Cheese made in East Africa, for you it may seem like nothing, but for us it was a highlight.... We didn't quite get a tour but we got the priviledge of trying 6 or 7 different types of cheese from Derbyshire, to Blue and Red Highland to Cheddar before opting for 1/4kg of Cheddar cheese between us which serves us with a few cheese sandwiches throughout the day :D
Next stop on the map was Nyahururu, which was because we heard there was a really nice waterfalls there and after a good 20 minute walk, we finally made it to the foot of the 72m high waterfall which made for some nice pictures... Another highlight of Nyahururu was the fact we fact a ridiculously cheap accommodation... It cost us 400 Kenya Shillings between us... which is just under 1 pound per person....
Next we moved onto what was essentially the highlight of the travels, the chance to do our first national park and ride a bike at the same time! Hell's gate National park is one of a few in the world where you can actually cycle through the park and do some game viewing. Nonetheless we were up at 5 30am, cycling to the gate which opened at 6. Apart from a minor problem with Kieran's bike at the start it was a really nice, allbeit shattering day. We cycled 36 km in total... and we saw loads of Zebras, a handful of Giraffes, warthogs and monkeys. We even managed to catch a glimpse of 2 hyenas right in the early morning which was quite a nice treat. We were enjoying Jam snadwiches for lunch until a babboon decided to attack our lunch meal, tried to scare us away and of all the food he went for, it was the Jam! The babboon try to swipe our Jam! So that's a lesson for you.... All in all, it was a cracking day, and we got to spend a couple of days relaxing and recovering by a lovely lake!
Finally, we headed off to Nairobi. Nairobi, it has a reputation of being one of the most dangerous capitals in Africa but i suppose it was because we were sensible, but we had no problems whatsoever and we had a great time. We even went out one night to a nice Ethiopian restaurant where we had a curry with sme traditional Ethiopian bread. We also got the chance to get the best view over Nairobi at the Kenyatta conference centre in Nairobi which has views that stretch as far as Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania! We also managed to go to the Masai Mara market...
All in all, it's been a nice week to 10 day trip. I've really enjoyed myself, but i have to admit it's good to be back, although it's been quite sad to realise the next time i'll leave the country is actually via Entebbe Airport back to Britain... As much as i'm looking forward to the day when i see everyone again... I'm not wishing that day comes too quickly.
I guess that's it for today... I'll maybe give one or two blog entries towards the end of the year. Maybe one in a couple of weeks, given i still have 2 weeks off, might do a bit of travelling in and around Uganda... Hoping to Climb Mt Elgon soon! Should be fun.
Until then, take care
Love
