Hi everyone. It seems like absolutely ages since I was in Chiang Mai but I'm going to do my best to remember what we did here.
I always start with the journey and this blog is no exception! We had an overnight bus from Luang Prabang which took about 14 hours. This was to the Thai Laos boarder. Here we were told that we'd missed our mini bus and that we'd have to wait 7 hours for the next one. We were pretty annoyed but have become used to incidents like this. A journey without delay would seem totally weird now! So we occupied ourselves for 7 hours, mainly by eating and chatting to another girl who was stranded with us as well. We then had a 6 hour journey to Chiang Mai. When we arrived in the city, the first thing we saw (well hannah saw - I missed it) was an elephant in the street. Totally not what I expected to see! We found a hostel to stay, booked a trip for the following day and went straight to bed. The 27 hour journey had taken it out of us!
The next morning we were out for 8am to do our hill tribe visit, bamboo rafting and elephant treking. We had such a great day. It was really interesting to see how the hill tribes lived. Hannah had a go at making a silk scarf as well. The rate she was going it would have taken about a year to complete. She managed about 3 lines in 10 minutes! We then went and had lunch which was absolutely delicious and all included in the trip. Next was the elephant treking. I never considered how scary it was going to be! If you look at the pictures you can see me gripping onto the bar for dear life! I felt like i was about to fall off at any second and it wasn't the most comfortable of rides ever. Throughout the trek you could feed them banana's and sugar cane. We weren't sure whether you should peel the banana's so hannah asked a thai lady. She responded with, "They're elephants not people silly!" We felt slightly stupid! By the end of the trek i was also covered in all kinds of elephant snot as our elephant continued to sneeze all over us out of its trunk. Lovely! The next activity was bamboo rafting. This was pretty tame really but very relaxing despite our driver finding it hillarious to splash water at us the whole time!
That night we headed out into Chaing Mai hoping to find some decent night life. We failed miserably and ended up at the night market and then a very quiet bar with a live band. We decided to call it a night and headed off to bed.
The next day we had booked ourselves onto a Thai cooking course. This was probably the best activity I've done in the whole of my travels. I absolutely loved it! I made Pad Thai, Panang Curry, Coconut milk soup and hot basil stir fry. I dont want to blow my own trumpet but they were all amazing!! Its making me hungry just thinking about it. I've yet to find a panang curry as good as the one i made as well - very disappointing!
That night we had a flight to catch to Phucket. For once there were absolutely no delays. We were there within 2 hours and felt like we had totaly cheated in the traveling game by not going overland. I wasn't complaining though!
Even though we were only in Chinag Mai for less than 2 days we packed so much in. It was one of my favourite places so far!
Next blog is all the island fun. Can't bring myself to write it now though as this internet cafe has no air con and im cooking! I'll probably write from Australia as we're heading there in 2 days. Cant beleive our time in SE Asia has come to an end!
Anyway speak soon everyone x x x
