After a freezing cold night and not much sleep, feeling a little cranky as well I said my farewells to Gus and Salano who were continuing on their tour towards Nairobi.
The owner of Grubby's Grotto kindly gave me a lift to Jollyboys Backpackers, the last of my homes for this trip.
After settling in quickly I was keen to get out and explore Livingstone town, which is more or less a one main street. Of course there the curios market and all 60 stalls selling pretty much the same stuff.
The night before catching up with me, it was time for a nana nap - hard life!
What a luscious and special afternoon arriving at the 5 star Royal Livingstone Lodge - another world which I hate think what costs per night... While waiting for my afternoon tour of Livingstone Island to begin, I took in the view from the river deck with the misty spray of the falls bellowing up like smoke on one side and the rush of the Zambezi River just metres away, whilst savouring a couple of Mosi local beers.
A short speed boat ride on the Zambezi to Livingstone Island to get up close to the lip of the falls - wow wow wow, absolutely spectacular being only metres away from the edge of the falls with rainbows and the fresh rainy spray. The falls are currently at their peak so the amount of water (approx 1 million litres per second according to Lonely Planet) plummeting the 108 metres below creates a thunderous roar - hence the nickname "the smoke that thunders".
Feeling very posh having high tea by the falls. Snapped out of the moment being hurried along by the guides - it was either knock off time or getting out of the way before the hippos came to settle in for the night...
Returning to the impeccable and pristine Royal Livingstone Lodge, finishing the afternoon with an appropriately named cocktail "under African skies" on the river deck, with a soloist playing some soft tunes in the background, watching an amazing sunset across the Zambezi - this is the life.
Back to reality and back to jollyboys backpackers for an early night.
