I mentioned in the last blog that I was coming to Nelson... All sounds amazing when every one says its so beautiful and people are so kind, the hostels are wicked and just plain awesome... Why wouldn't I want to come here to Suss it out.
I thought, can't wait to move on again and check out this hippie town and the beautiful scenery...
I didn't enjoy it!
As soon as the bus arrived I felt crap... It was dark at 4:30, I had a headache, I was tired and my back was aching. That's what 6 hours on a bus does to you I guess- well now I've gone and booked myself onto a 12 hour bus ride again to get out of here.
Seems silly, but Nelson disappointed me. I had that vibe as soon as I was off the bus that I wasn't feeling comfortable. I asked the cabbie on my 5 minute ride to the hostel if there was anything definite to see in this town, was it big?
He laughed at me then said, "takes about 3 minutes to walk through."
What have I got myself into this time, another small town, hopefully there's something exiting to do or the beautiful scenery is accessible.
Checked in for a week with a smile on my face.
Awoke the next day, after a horrible sleep on a spring "bed", with a soft lumpy cushion for a pillow, a constant creaking noise through the night to feel cold and miserable, not keen to go check the streets out, but of course I did, I'm here to see the wanders of Nelson right...
Wow. It was absolutely not amazing outside, slight peer of sun (this was the only day that wasn't raining and foggy) I got lost wondering through suburbia, checked out the shops and bought myself enough food for 2 days. Sussed the Main Street shops (virtually all closed after lunch on a Sunday). Well that was exciting.
Not much happened Sunday night or Monday besides deciding to cancel my weeks worth of accommodation and to leave on Wednesday, i don't care where to as long as I'm not here.
Monday night happened to get talking to one of the guys who had a car, went up to Ainsworth hot springs: it was the best thing about the town (although it was half an hour away and i expected it to be all natural) but the caves were incredibly relaxing, obviously very warm and surprisingly busy... Who wouldn't want to be there I understand but I don't get where all the people had come from.. Where's this excitement in town?
The craziness was in the hostel, I didn't feel unsafe but it was definitely interesting to say the least. There was no tv, there was a girl that looked sort of Amish and talked very proper. Would walk stiff in her long white flowing skirt and blouse with her handbag clenched to her side while she would stare at a wall...
There was also an older French man that would hang around in his towel while making his breakfast- yummy. He also has his weed stolen by another older Frenchman. Lesson is don't leave your weed out round here... Everyone wants it.
Overheard another talking about which pill knocks them self out for 3 days so they can get a good sleep.
Definitely out of my comfort zone here.
Due to one of the girls here I was told to see cottonwood falls, this was a pretty park with a man made waterfall and a weird little cottage (looked like some form of rape dungeon) but it was the prettiest thing in town. I'm sure summer could be nice along the waterfront but bingo I picked the wrong time of year again.
Tuesday came and had to start thinking about where I was going on Wednesday. I gave this place a few day chance but i give up... I could go to Banff and wait there for my friend and partner to come with our newly bought car or go to rainy Vancouver and meet them there on Thursday then drive through to wherever later. I do want to learn to ski and I'm so ready to see the snowfall again but a 14 hour bus ride and $140 I think i might pass off banff for now and I'll wait.
I'm backtracking to Vancouver again and I n ever thought I'd say it but I'm excited.
Although it's a 9 hour bus ride still to go back wards (even though ita been delayed by 3 hours) its only $100 and I get to see my boys early, I think I need that.
So phase #4 was a shamble, waste of money... But at least I know and I've experienced the yarn shops, the craft fair and the steep hills.
When the bus arrives :) Phase #5 VANCOUVER, BOYFRIEND's ARRIVES and ROADTRIP!!!
Yay!
