Phase #7, were in Banff, the best part about it is that its a town, & the ski hill. A lot of ups & downs, Yesterday was insanely fluffy in Sunshine. Today not so much. It's a Saturday so all the Monday to Friday workers are up the hill scratching all the Pow away. Lost my boost of confidence & at the start of the day was taken down a Very long flat Green run then onto a Black run, Took my bindings off & slid down the hill. Figured I'd come back to the hostel & look for some accommodation for the next few months, were looking at settling down in Big White.
Big White's events before we left; Wings night, 0.45c a wing, 6 different flavours so, 60 wings for three people please, & to mistakingly piss off the waitress, a rolled up bunch of penny's - There was about 2 Loonies worth in there along with another toonies worth of tips... Money's money, why do they dish it if they don't want it back? Bloody bronze 1 cent useless penny's. We decided to leave & try sliding down the hill, thinking we were as slippery as a snowboard didn't work out so well for us, we stopped dramatically & just got a bunch of wet legs and chests from it. dumb idea #1.
Also Big White had the first light up, Fire works, free hot chocolate & chestnuts, bomb fire & all... Pitty it wasn't that exciting, not many people ventured out for the event & the fireworks only lasted a couple minutes. Chestnuts too my god they were disgusting. At least I've trieds them!
Last day was Ski Doo's. Was insane... well at least I thought so, I was laging behind the group of 10, decided on my way back I would make the Leaders assistant drive my doo back to base while I was a passenger. Felt so unconfident driving, was wobbling side to side, the handle bars were shaking & I didnt want to crash. I was told later that I picked one with the dodgy handle bars. Thanks Guys! Either way was fun & an experience I wouldn't have anywhere else, And the boys ofcourse loved it. That night we got out our winning trophy we picked up from dollarama to play the famous Kings Drinking game. Ofcourse we decided to gang up on the couple we were staying with. Plainly because theyre younger & don't drink as much. They definitely felt it the next day, we on the other hand, got drunk but are fine. Hangovers don't seem to affect me up this side of the world. I don't undertstand why, but it's fine with me!
Made our way to Banff passing through Silver Star (Not much to see here), but Black Diamond runs & we did taste an expensive hot chocolate & pie. Disappointment...
Revelstoke for a night, stayed in a motel that stunk, bugs in the bathroom, wifi was minimal but a suprisingly comfortable bed. Up the hill was where I relaxed with a few hot chocolates & free Wi-Fi while the boys had a morning of steep runs. I could have spent $30 to go up the hill to see it at least, but I was told to not bother. Not much to see here as the midway lodge was shut. Save me mulla for another day...
Rivers, Lakes, Trees & Scenery along the way to Lake Louise was the prettiest yet, Lakes that had mirror images of the mountain behind them, trees that were as white as a ghost, Rivers that went for a long time with a cliff face on the other side of us. Was incredible. Made Lake Louise a bit of a let down
This was our next stop. A Beautiful little town with a massive frozen lake, thought it would be bigger & busier. It was still large & still pretty cool surrounded by mountains & slowly went down into a valley at the end, but maybe would look a lot nicer in sunshine while not icy & -13 degrees with tiny flurries. We did get a chance to catch up with friends from home, while on there honeymoon. Finally a break from meeting people & talking to boys, & someone to take photos of the three of us. I get to a point where I'm taking so many photos of the boys i'm with, just to capture the moment, there's minimal of me & they are starting to hate the facebook updates of there faces. We do though want to head back to Lake Louise to check out a waterfall at the otherside of the Lake, Maybe we won't play in the snow & under the trees this time. I managed to capture plenty of snow falling on top of heads, down the back of jackets.
Now in Banff, Alberta for 8 nights, after seeing the pretty sun beam over the mountains, the shock of the cold was hectic. The cheaper alcohol & less tax on everything was a good thing though, just so hard to understand why it would be so much colder here & we've seen so many deers/elks/reindeers, 6 hours away from our last destination. Why the big change!?.. We have had a few good meals & cheap drinks in this hostel & the 6 bed dorm isn't too bad, just wish the staff were a little less obnoxious & made cooking easier. Trivia night gave us the title of the best team name *The Bloody Merkin* also gave us the enthusiasm to hit up the drum & bass night at the Dancing Sascwatch pub/club. It's a typical Canadian styled place- Wood everything (bar, stools, poles, walls). Wood/Logs everywhere! Massive glasses to drink from. Was interesting & caused us to have a decent sleep in the next morning...
We like Banff's hills & the views around here, but I'm not a fan of the dirty town & how much people talk it up. I guess it's good as there are a lot of things around like clubs, pubs, pools, shops... Just wasn't as I expected, much like Vancouver, Was expecting the big bang of enthusiasm.
Although the mountain is gorgeous & so spacious here, We've decided to head back to Big White to find a job, find a seasonal home & chill out for a bit until were ready to move again. Save some more money & we're so ready to wake up on hillside every morning. Can't wait to have a base again & stop spending so much money on eating out & staying in dirty hostels/motels & living from bags. Phase #8 time,.. Including 10 days until christmas... First White Christmas though, the coutdown begins. How bloody exciting!
