arrived in Latacunga yesterday from Banos. stayed in a lovely hostel with music playing until 4am..rock hard bed...quite possibly bed bugs and i must say..an awesome cold shower in the morn. i didnt leave my room for a couple of hours for fear of being mugged by the lovely chaps who were staying in the room opposite which was about half a meter from my room which was all of 2m squared. everytime i had to go in and out of my room they seduced me with their words of admiration NOT.ew.
Ok mum you can read from here on....in the morn i had some cornflakes and milk yummo..but no bowl so had to cut the top off the milk carton and use it as a bowl..which might i add i thought was pretty smart! that is until somehow i managed to spill the whole thing over my jeans...haha oh well lucky i brought my trusty wipes with me.
in the morning i set off on a tour with a couple i met from Oz the day before in one of the tour agencies offices. we headed off to tour the Cotopaxi Volcanoe which was around 5500m of which we managed 5000m..very impressive i must say. we drove with the guide up to the base of the volcanoe and then walked up the rest of the way until the thick snow started. the rest of the way needed to be done with special hiking equipment and at midnight when the snow was hard as there is a risk of avalanche during the day when the snow is softened by the sun. we had a nice packed lunch and took some pics and headed back down. on the way there we passed an army of about 300 llamas which were soooo cute..they were being hearded to a different property... they are such a timid animal. the whole day went from about 8am til 530pm when we arrived back in Latacunga. Our guide 'Luis' was lovely. He only spoke Spanish so there were a few minor discrepencies but we got the gist of it in the end.
we had some vegetable consome, spaghetti and rice for dinner tonight..not bad. One of the old ladies that was there couldnt help but laugh at us for at least ten minutes...not sure why but oh well i guess we made her night. hehe...silly foreigners! tried to establish whether or not the water was from the tap or not.....hope our translation was correct otherwise we will have a long and not so comfortable trip ahead of us!
ive managed to book another hostel next door to the one i stayed in last night..thank god!...its very simple and the bathroom is pretty grotty but at least i dont feel like im going to be mugged halfway through the night and i made sure there would be no loud sleazy guys playing music all night. so will let you know how it goes. weve all decided to leave our luggage there while we do the Quilotoa loop and collect it on return so fingers crossed it will be there on our return.
signing off for now hasta luego amigos!
