I was up all night packing and attempting to clean up before leaving for our three week journey to Senegal. We arrived at Charlotte Douglas Airport at 7am. Serigne and I had two large suitcases, a rolling carryon, and backpack. United Airlines was going to charge us $150 due to excessive weight. We had two bags at the 50lb limit, one at 60lbs, and the other at 65lbs. We were taking items out of the largest bag and placing them in the carryon. The nice lady assisting us went to the back while we attempted to re-arrange bags. She came back and to our surpise we did not have to pay anything since we were traveling internationally. They were initially trying to charge us fron NC to DC, but it's not our fought that we had to layover so there was no charge. Thank you !!!!''
We got on a small plane and for DC at 10:05am. The flight was good. It only took us 1 hour to Dulles Airport. We had a 5 hour layover in DC. As we head to the waiting area to board the next plane Serigne saw a middle-age lady who was having a difficult time. We assisted her and learned that she was traveling to Dakar from NYC. She had a large poketbook, duffle bag, and a rolling carryon with a "broke wheel" and sh almost fell on the escalator. So, we finally got to the waiting area and Serigne and I decided to eat lunch at Five Guys and we brought her a chicken sandwich combo from Wendy's. We started boarding the plan about 4:45pm and we took off at 5:40pm headed to Senegal.
I have never seen such a large plane. We were fortunate to have window seats and not be in the middle row (4 seats). The pilot informed us that the flight was only 6 hours and 40 minutes.!!!! South African Airways took care of us. They provided us with socks to help with circulation, eye masks, and mini toothbrush and toothpaste. I listened to the radio and watched Taken the 123 starring Denzel Washington. I also took a long nap. We had our choice of chicken and meatballs for dinner.
I told Serigne to call his brother back to let him know that we would be arriving at 5:30am instead of 7am, but he did not......
