Kalbarri 5th - 6th May
Well we (Sue-Ellen, Niels, Mark & Mini- Monkey - Sarah had to work) set off early as we had an 8-hour drive ahead of us. Once we got out to the open bush we were amazed at the difference between now and our previous visit. Obviously Australia had experienced a little rain and instead of dry yellow bush, we were greeted to green! Also, the other difference was that everything seemed a little closer together, but that was simply because we weren't in a VW campervan that didn't go over 50km per hour. We had a 'real' fast car. (Well … a Toyota Corolla). But it's difficult to describe exactly how big Australia is and how long it takes to get between each town.
The journey lasted 8 hours and we barely got up the map! On the way we didn't stop much, apart from lunch and a brief jaunt to Geraldton for a quick picture of the lighthouse. Upon arriving late-ish in Kalbarri we went for a look at the surfers at Jaques Bay, had a meal and a cocktail (or two) and straight to bed.
The following day we woke early to watch the Pelican feed at 8:45am. But the Pelicans didn't show!!! The feeder was a little red faced, but at least gave all the spectators a little info about the typical Pelican. We decided to try again tomorrow. We found out why gorges are called gorges. "It's because they're 'gorgeous!'" - Not my words, but the words of the Pelican feeder. After brekkie we set off to the gorges to walk the 10km Loop walk, which we did on our previous visit. Although this time round we we're a little better prepared. We had water! We took some pics at the famous "Nature's Window" and set off. The flies were as bad as before, but this time we had head nets. Luckily there was also more cloud cover so the walk wasn't has hard going. The temperature at the gorges is typically at least 5 degrees higher than in the town, so we guesstimated that it was in the low 30's. Once we got down to the base of the gorge, there was a river! I say that with an exclamation point because before it was a dry and yellow sand bank. It was also better marked so we didn't get lost. We also reminisced where we took pictures with our travelling partners Penny & Joe in 2005 (Hi Penny & Joe!) Upon our return to the car we headed over to the short walk that was the Z-bend and came to a lovely look-out point over the gorge.
Then tragedy struck! We lost Mini-monkey! I had him in my pocket the whole walk, but vanished once I was in the car already half-way back to Kalbarri. I was gutted and that means that he will never met his Ex-pat uncle monkey in Noosa. %uF04C We think that he fell in love with the baby Joey Kangaroo we saw and decided to ditch the party on the way back to the car.
Upon our return to Kalbarri, we had a quick shower and headed out for some fish and chips.
