Just got back from Sapa in the North and a chance to update our blog. Sadly we still can't manage to find anywhere where we can upload our photograph's yet though.
Just over a week into the trip and it feels like I've been away for ages. Our trip to Ha Long Bay was really good with the iconic scenes of the thousands of islands. We were there for two nights, spending the first on a boat. There was a good crowd of people on the trip with us and the evening passed really quickly learning to play the international travellers game of "s*** head". We went round caves, gazed at the scenery and had a challeng treck up to the top of one of the islands. Well, I found it challenging but some others were fine in flip flops!
We had a night back in Hanoi before taking the night train North to Loh Cai, which is really close to the Chinese border. A minibus then took us to Sapa, arriving in time for breakfast. If I thought that Ha Long Bay had been cold, Sapa really was. We were told it was only 5c yesterday! I had to buy another warm top before we headed out walking for the day. Up in the mountains, Sapa is beautiful with terracing and breathtaking views. The problem is we saw it in small glimpses as and when the mist cleared for a little while! The constant drizzle and rain made it feel even colder. The cafes and restaurants did well though as most of them had open fires and served lots of hot wine and hot chocolate to warm you up after a damp. cold walk. We went to one place that brought you an individual brazier to your table that was a bucket full of charcoal.
We now have a day in Hanoi before taking a night bus to Hue. It should be warmer as we are beginning to make our way South now but the forecast is rain. I think it will be a while yet before there are any sunbathing opportunities!
