We arrived in Ayutthaya yesterday afternoon having taken the bus from Sukkothai. I have been suffering from a rather bad stomach so a long bus journey was a bit of a challenge but I got here ok. Our guest house is an old Thai style teak house and has lots of charm and atmosphere. We arrived in time to book onto a small group tour by Tuk Tuk that afternoon of some of the temples including sunset from one of them and then two of them light up after dark.
We hadn't expected to stop at an "elephant kraal" where I got to play with a baby elephant that can only have been a few weeks old. Quite a magical experience. At the end of the trip the Tuk Tuk dropped us at the night market where we sat at a stall and shared a meal with some of the other people from the group trip.
Our Guest house had a lovely garden area that was basically all lily ponds, complete with frogs and covered areas to sit and enjoy the view from. A great place to eat breakfast or to cool down at the end of the day. We spent Wednesday looking round the sites in the centre of town, including some we had seen floodlit the night before. Highlights included Wat Ratburana which had a well preserved inner tomb area including murals still clearly visible on the walls and Wat Phra Mahathat which has the iconic image of the buddha head which has been completely enclosed by the roots at the base of a tree. We reckon we walked over 5 miles round the town and historical park in total.
