Back in KL for the second time having travelled back from Tioman Island yesterday. We saw quite a bit of the city last week and as it is not that big a city we did a lot of walking from one sight to another. On the first day we went round the Central Market, Little India, the Islamic Arts Museum which was really impressive, the National Museum and the central park area to visit the huge aviary.
On our second day we started out quite early to que for tickets to go on the sky bridge that joins the twin Petronas Towers. The wait was worthwhile and both the building and the views were superb. The sky was very hazy but luckily not cloudy so we had a good view across the city. Next to the Petronas Towers is the KLCC which is a large office and shopping centre. The air con was wonderful but there were so many familiar shops that I could have been walking around Canary Wharf!
This time around we are staying in the China Town area and have eaten at the street stalls around the market area in the evenings. It is a lively place and people are genuinely friendly and chatty as you rub shoulders with them at the next table.
Yesterday we took a bus out to Selangor to visit the Batu caves. They have become places of worship and have a number of shrines in them and are also home to lots of green velvet monkeys. The main caverns is an impressive size, probably over 200 feet high and the monkeys scampering around give quite a surreal feel to the place. You are not meant to feed them but they seem to live off the offerings made at the shrines, enjoying garlands of lotus and orchids. I opened my bag to get out some tiger balm for one of my sand fly bites (not nice) and immediately had three of them coming at me and too close for comfort!
Among other things today including walking round China Town and having a fantastic lunch in a vegetarian restaurant in Little India we have booked our next lot of onward travel; bus tickets to go to Melaka tomorrow morning and a train ticket from there to Singapore on Sunday. So the rest of the trip is just about mapped out now and home is getting nearer.
