We arrived in Chiang Mai yesterday evening after our short stopover in Bangkok. It was a good feeling to be flying and not on an endless bus ride through winding roads (I know my stomach appreciated it). I honestly have no idea how the buses maneuver around the roads in Vietnam…somewhat of a miracle that there aren't frequent mountainside collisions in the middle of the night if you ask me.
Chiang Mai is beautiful. It has more than 300 Buddhist temples and an enormous night market, which we are going to on Sunday night. It looks a lot different than Cambodia and Vietnam. The homes seem to be real homes (proper buildings) and you can tell this area has a lot more money than other areas. Part of the attraction here is the tourist activities and day trips. Heather has signed up for a cooking class tomorrow where they take her to the market and then teach her how to prepare and cook them…I think she selects 5 dishes. Being the all talented chef that I already am, I vied for a more useful option - heading out to the mountains and riding around on an ATV for the afternoon. We will compare notes afterwards.
We had our first Thai massage today and they work you HARD. The woman massaging Heather was stunned at how cold her hands were and kept touching mine to compare the two (fyi: Heather always has cold hands/feet and it is not related to the fever). We joked afterwards that she probably thought Heather had swine flu or something. It was incredibly relaxing and felt amazing, minus the jabbing elbows, I may even go back tomorrow.
Heather's foot appears to be healing pretty well. The wound is closing up a bit, or at least we think it is, but she has a fever right now. She was boiling hot last night, even her arms were warm, but she felt freezing cold. She felt better after we rested for a few hours this afternoon, but it has come back and she has headed back to the room as I write this update. We are going to try and sleep without the air conditioning and see if that helps. The rooms get REALLY cold at night so we think this might be contributing to the fever…that or the antibiotics she's on. Standby for an official Heather Health Update tomorrow.
Hope everyone is well and we will write to you soon.
Love,
Leanna & Heather
p.s. On Sunday we are going out to an elephant conservation camp where you get to literally hang out with an elephant. You may be wondering how one goes about hanging out with an elephant....well this means washing, playing in the mud (not in that order), feeding and riding the elephants. Heather is over the moon and really excited…I guess they even have two baby elephants - should be good! J
