Here I am in Fez, the cutural and artisanal capital of Morocco. We are here for only a couple of days, then its on to Rabat and Casablanca. The culture shock is beginning to wear off, but our experience is still pretty bizarre by comparison with anywhere else we have been. Here, we spent some time in the packed souqs, watching smiths hammering out metal plates or master leatherists creating fine vests and cushions. We also fended off crazy carpet sellers, stepped out of the way of charging donkeys, and made a wide berth around the wheelbarrows full of snails.
But most of the time we spent with our new friend Adi, meeting his enormous family, watching the sunset over the ancient kasbah, and best of all, joining in a huge communal dinner. Its the kind where everyone gets a piece of bread, and theres a big bubbling dish of food in the middle of the table for all to dip into. It had been cooking all day, but it disappeared in a matter of a few minutes. It was definitely one of the wildest dinners Ive ever eaten.
