This time the ferry ride was quite long, with a bus ride thrown in at the end... all in all we traveled from 3:30 am until we reached Rethymno, Crete, at around 9 pm (with, of course, zero sleep). Crete is beautiful, full of rolling hills and mountains and surrounded by a clear sea. The sun here is brutal though; with no cloud cover, it beats down mercilessly all day long.
The most important thing we did here was to go on a hike through the spectacular Samaria Gorge, a cornucopia of craggy ledges, towering cliffs and snaking streams. I have a few pics, so check out the Greece folder. The hike starts at the top and ends at the bottom (we took the easy way!) and took about 5 hours, including a stop for lunch. It was a beautiful day, all told, except for one little detail: on the way back, we had a series of travel fiascoes in which we missed several connections in a row by mere minutes, and we were left stranded 70 kilometers from Rethymno at 9 oclock at night. The return trip was supposed to take almost four hours as it was... you can imagine how tired we when we finally got back home. Broke, too... the cab rides cost almost 60 euro.
