Yesterday was a sad day. We said goodbye to Alex, and dropped her off at Tegel airport Berlin for her flight home. We have had such a ball together over the past 3 weeks. Lid and I couldn't sleep and were awake at 3:00am. Had to be up at 5:00 to take Alex to her flight.
We continued on to Dresden, Lidia shedding a tear the entire way. What a softy! I soon had her laughing with my insanely funny jokes though (or was she trying her best to ignore me, I forget).
Anyway, we stopped in Dresden at 8:30 and found a park, then wandered into a restaurant for breakfast.
Dresden is a beautiful place, with lots of gothic buildings and beautifully colored restaurants and hotels. We had a look around and after a while it started pouring rain. We got drenched and it was freezing cold.
Eventually it eased up enough for us to get to the Zwinger art gallery, where they have Raphaels Angels on display. Lidia sat on the sofa in front of the painting for ages. There were also a lot of other fantastic paintings in the gallery by artists like Rembrandt, Holstein, Carravaggio, etc.
In the gift shop, Lid bought a Raphaels Angels umbrella and guess what? It stopped raining and the sun came out and we never used the umbrella. Not only that but we forgot about the fact that we had to fit it into our luggage. Seasoned travellers we are!
We left Dresden then and drove another 2 hours into Prague, land of the language with an enormous consonant to vowel ratio. Liberal use of z, k and v sprinkled through all of their signs. What a magnificent city. The architecture is mind-blowing.
We are staying in a renovated monastery where 4 monks still live. Apparently they brew beer which is sold in the bar. It was none too shabby as well, which I can tell you from experience.
We walked into the Old Town square and took some great shots of Charles bridge across the river. The old town square has vendors that sell ham which is spit roasted. This was recommended to us by Rad, so we had to try some. It was delicious, however it is a tourist trap. They have a sign with pricing, but the pricing is for 100g. It looks reasonable at 3 euro per 100g, so I order 2 hams, thinking it would be 200g, but they cut off two slices of ham that would have choked a lion, whacked them on the scales and said $58 euros thanks! After I picked myself up off the ground I made him put one of them back which took the price down to $38 euro. There was still too much for both of us to finish, so we ended up giving some of it to a homeless dude who was hanging around. We also gave him an almost full bowl of potato and saurkraut which we couldn't finish. We saw him run off with his spoils to 2 of his mates. He shared the potato but wasn't letting them anywhere near the ham.
After that we wandered around looking at the amazing clock tower (photos to come later) and the crystal and Lladro shops.
We got lost on the way back to the hotel, which made me a popular boy, but eventually found our way back and fell into bed like corpses.
