Last morning in lovely Bologna. The girls took lots if extra bread rolls from breakfast and we fed the pigeons in the piazza near our hotel. Quick taxi ride to the station. What's with the taxi drivers in Bologna? They get you there the direct route and even try to give you change! Unbelievable! A very quick train ride to Firenze (37 mins). Not sure why we bother to buy expensive seats for the train when it seems a lot of people sit where they want and mysteriously disappear when a conductor is around - mmmm. A short walk to our Firenze hotel - once we figured out the actual front of the station. A couple of times (Toulouse and here), directions have stated to "exit the station and then turn on right/left" and the question is WHICH EXIT?!! We have an apartment at the hotel which essentially means a table, chairs and a mini kitchenette in a largish room. Went for a walk to the Duomo. From there got a horse carriage ride through the streets. Was lovely. The girls were enthralled. The horse's name was Baldo. The carriage ride gave us a short tour so we could see what we should visit later. Then onto the carousel for the girls (something we had spotted on the ride). On past the statue of David, then to the Ponte Vecchio. The girls had a caricature each done and also bought a scarf from the market. A day of children's treats! The hotel recommended a restaurant only 100 metres away, which turned out to be very nice. I had oysters, squid ink spaghetti and a flaming dessert. Mario had a ribollita soup which he loved and a meat dish.
