We are currently in Ooty, which is an incredibly attractive area (think the Lake district with Tea plantations and hill tribes). We travelled down here from a place called Mysore which was also pretty awesome. For the journey we decided to take a private minibus "22 seater", clearly designed for Ewoks, Umpalumpas or some other small fictious characters, not lanky Westerners like me and Claire. As usual in India, some of the other passengers were late and nobody else seemed to mind waiting. The driver also had no problem taking a route that took twice as long to accommodate some of the other passengers and we even managed to squeeze in an extra family the driver saw on route; there is always room for more. Fortunately my bitterness towards all these minor annoyances of the local ways passed when we drove through Bandipur National Park. Almost as soon as we got through the the gate we saw a family of elephants! What was so amazing about this site was that these elephants unlike all other was we had seen until now were undomesticated. So real elephants in the wild!! Very exciting stuff!! While I am excited about animal sitings I will mention that we saw a big black cobra crossing the road in Mysore, and we have seen green parrots flying, all kinds of birds of prey and a Kingfisher.
The next few days we hope to spend trekking in hills and visiting national parks.
