Hello from Goa! We spent the last two nights in Pune, another large city not far from Mumbai. We got our first real taste of Indian poverty over there. One little girl begging for money, literally gripped my arm and would not let go and another little boy, no older than four ran beside us singing 'You are my sunshine', which is just plain cruel and designed to make you cry and give away all your worldly goods. Luckily Dean is more hard-faced and makes us walk away.
The roads are crazy in Pune. There are virtually no traffic lights, so at crossroads, cars, bikes and animals (yes animals) just weave in and out of one another. Riding in a taxi is fun. I spend nearly the whole time screaming at near-misses with other vehicles and with dogs, who sit in the road until the last possible moment then leisurely stroll out of the way of our Tuk Tuk, traveling at 50mph. Bloody mad. And then there are the cows and donkeys who will have a nice leisurely nap - in the middle of the busiest road in the city! God help you if you try to cross a road in Pune - it's best just to choose restaurants and amenities on the same side of the road.
Today we took a flight to Goa, which is pretty chilled out, particularly since it's off-season. Dean, God bless him, has found us a poker cruise to go on whilst here in Goa. Don't ever say we didn't experience the real India!
Speak soon, Claire x
