Not sure when last I wrote and I can't check as I currently have not internet or wifi. Only in Dodge City Kansas. I think last I posted was from New Orleans so I'll go from there.
New Orleans north across the bridge over Lake Pontchartrain. Pretty impressive, I think it is 7 miles in length, not truly a bridge, more an elevated causeway, but a cool ride just the same. Rode out of LA into MS. Took all back roads (some dirt) through MS. Saw some amazing country, and cool little towns - cool to have coffee, but wouldn't want to live there, supper buggy. Spent the night literally on the east bank of the Mississippi River, Greenville MS, kinda felt like Mark Twain. I think this is the third Greenville where I've spent the night. The next morning I crossed the river into AR. and rode to Alma. Overnight in Alma, then rode over Boston Mountain (big hill, but I think the highest in the state) and into Pea Ridge. Visited the Elkhorn Tavern which was the site of the Civil War Battle of Pea Ridge and also on the Trail of Tears (the trail the Native Americans were marched on from the east coast to Oklahoma). This was a stop of interest as my Great, Great Grandfather and his family owned and lived in the Elkhorn Tavern in 1862, the time of the battle. The women and children hid in the cellar for 3 days - not sure were Pops was. Then up to Joplin MO. where I saw family, old family farm houses. cemeteries etc. Saw family I hadn't seen in many years and met some for the first time. Plus the rain followed me and MO. is in a drought so the fam. seemed happy to see me.
On to Oklahoma City and stayed with a friend, now in Dodge City Kansas. The grasshoppers in OK and KS. are the size of small birds. They hurt like hell when they hit the body at 70mph, and make a huge mess on the windscreen of my helmet, spent a good part of the day on the side of the road wiping green and yellow goo off my face mask so I could see the road.
