Saz and Dave's travels
We woke up quite late today as we had to catch up on missed sleep! When we got up we had a look at the guidebook for quite a while to try and decide what to do as we didnt fancy hanging around Patong beach for very long! We eventually decided to go to Laem Singh beach, about 8km North of Patong as this was recommended in the free magazine on our flight yesterday. Having decided where we wanted to go we now had to decide how to get there, the problem is that there aren't really any buses here and the main way people get about is by tuk tuk (very expensive) or by renting a car or motorbike (dangerous). Dave really wanted to hire a motorbike but I wasn't too sure as he has never ridden one before and I wanted to check out what the roads were like first. Therefore we decided to get a tuk tuk to the beach today even though this was over twice the price of renting a motorbike for the day (500 baht for tuk tuk and about 200 baht for a motorbike) and maybe rent a bike tomorrow depending on the roads.
Just before getting in the tuk tuk we nipped into the 7-11 for some breakfast - deciding on hotdogs and water (not so healthy). The drive to the dropping off point for the beach took about 25 minutes and the road didn't seem too bad. It was quite steep and windy in parts but not at all busy. After being dropped off by the driver we then had to walk down quite a steep path to the beah.
Laem Singh beach is beautiful and a thousand times nicer than Patong! It was quite empty and secluded, with just a couple of very basic restaurants and some sun loungers with umbrellas for hire. The sea seemed really turquise here and looked great as it splashed over the boulders by the water. We chilled out here on the beach for most of the day, getting a bite to eat at the little restaurant & swimming loads in the sea. It's really weird swimming here as the sea is actually warm and it feels like getting into a bath! Later in the afternoon 3 men with snakes, an iguana and a gibbon came round to try to get people to pay to get their photographs taken. We of course opted out, especially because of the way the men were treating the animals. The guy with the iguana was swinging it round by it's tail and dropped it onto Dave like a toy. The gibbon was also sick on the person it was getting its photo taken with as it was probably overheated or something!
We left the beach at about 6pm to get the tuk tuk back to Patong. Dave then tried to pick up the laundry we handed in yesterday but the woman said it wasn't ready yet as it was just 'too dirty'! Charming! This was a slight problem for Dave as he had absolutely nothing clean to wear out for tea. We solved this problem very quickly though, as while Dave was in the shower, I ran out and got him a new white Kaftan for about 2 quid (after ruthlessly knocking about 60% off the original price!).
We went for tea at a cheap restaurant where we got some nice Thai food and played cards. Later we got some chocolate (the first i have had since England!) then went back to the room to watch a film and drink one of the mini bottles of red wine that we got free on our flight from Heathrow to Bangkok weeks ago and have been carrying them round since!
