Saz and Dave's travels
This morning we got up fairly early to have breakfast as we had decided the previous night that we wanted to head accross the island in search of Moodi Beach. The guidebook mentioned that it was a lovely remote beach just ten minutes walk away from Long beach. So off we set.
The weather was scorching again today so we were glad that we set off before the midday heat and also that we decided to wear our proper shoes as this clearly was not a walk to be attempted in flip flops.
We set off and steamed straight to Long Beach with no stops at all and made it in good time (not compared to the guidebooks recommendation but we were happy). We then walked the full length of Long Beach (aptly named as we found out) to find the path to Moodi beach, however Thailand's lack of signposts struck again as we soon found ourselves slightly lost and facing a large climb up a set of about 200 rickety looking steps. At the sight of this the American girl in front of us decided to sack it off and turned round to chill on Long beach, however we decided that (as we always do) the hard way was definately the right way and started our assent. At the top of the steps we quickly realised that this was not the way to Moodi Beach but more of a lovely resort, so slightly knackered and downhearted we decided that we had earnt (and splashed out on) a cold drink. The cafe here at Phi Phi Hill Resort had an awesome view accross Long Beach and Sarah captured some ace pictures which can be seen in the photo album. Despite getting lost it was still definately worth it just for the views.
After our drinks we asked the lady at reception the way to Moodi beach, and she informed us that we had to go back down all the steps and then back up another hill to get to the beach. Thinking it would be straight foward from now on we set off up the steep hill and were so enthusiastic that we missed the turn (not that there were any signs) and found ourselves in the middle of a forest at an apparent rubbish dump with piles of burning refuse and stripped down cars. Admitting we had probably gone the wrong way we turned back and took the other road at the T-junction. After another 15 minutes walking we found ourselves at one of the most picturesque beaches we have seen yet. The sand was perfect and the clear sea a lovely shade of turquiose, and the beach was lined with hundreds of palm trees providing loads of shade, paradise.
With the joy of reaching the beach we both just dropped our bags at the nearest tree and ran into the sea which was so hot that in order to cool down we actually had to sit on the bottom where the cool water could be found.
The rest of the day was spent reading, eating the doughnuts and cinnamon buns, purchased from the Phi Phi bakery, and some grapes that had plenty of seeds in which Sarah proceeded to eat as she beleives that it provides one with good ruffage (whatever that is) but i decided it was far more fun just to spit the pips at her. Sarah also invented a cool beach game, which we have named coconut hurling, where one using a stick of bamboo throws a hollowed coconut shell as far as possible, made the hours fly by. We also tried beach javelin after we broke the bamboo sticks, but probably looked like a pair of plonkers than atheletic spartans.
Later in the afternoon paradise was slightly tainted by the arrival of around 7 loud Americans who demanded that everyone on the beach knew they were there by shouting as load as possible to each other, maybe they had hearing difficulties, i dont know, it was annoying eitherway.
At 5ish, fearing that we may have to try to find our way back in the dark, we started our long treck back to the Phi Phi hotel. It didnt seem as far as we first imagined as this time we went the right way.
Back at the room, we partook in our Phi Phi ritual of coffee, shower and TV before making a move to get some tea. After the days hard work we thought that we deserved some Pizza and went to the Italian accross the path from the hotel. The food was slightly expensive however extremely nice with really friendly staff and a really nice beach side view (not that we could see anything in the pitch black but at least you could hear the sea, which then made us worry about the Tsunami risk).
