I am awaiting my plane from BWI to Florida. Thank you to all who called or text me this morning wishing me off; I greatly appreciate it!
As of yesterday I finally felt prepared to go on the trip after the last three days being disorganized. My name and disorganization do no go hand in hand....not to toot my own horn.
::toot toot!!::
I'm looking forward to seeing the volunteer house and meeting people who I will band together with for the next week while I'm in Quito. I can't be the girl eating dinner alone!! Im hoping after the short orientation today, I will know what to expect as I received very little information about my volunteer responsibilities.
I can't believe this all worked out in such little time as the volunteer organization said it may not happen due to needing at least 6 weeks minimum. Organized everything in 4 weeks!
I arrived in Quito around 6:30, but with customs and going through security, I didn't actually get to my house until 9:00 pm. The person who checked me in primarily speaks Spanish so I'm going to have to get used to being frustrated with not knowing what others are saying. Either way, I got in safe and sound. Where I'm staying, it's way more developed here and the Ecuador people say this is the "Gringo" area where all the tourists go.
I met a few interesting people on the plane. Initially I thought everything was going to look extremely underdeveloped, but it's not. Maybe because of the area I'm in though who knows. Curaçao was more underdeveloped than here. Will see though as I travel throughout. The altitude is 9,350 ft here. So when I arrived, I experienced a bad headache and I never thought walking up steps was hard until today. I will get used to the altitude after a few days everyone keeps telling me.
I'm staying with a woman from Holland and she is staying here another 3 months doing an internship. Apparently all the volunteers left several weeks ago so this is the slower season. She showed me to this Mexican restaurant and my huge meal was only $6? Apparently you can get lunch here too for about $3. So, I may not do much shopping for food. On another note, the expensive H2O bottle I bought malfunctioned somehow because the "filtered water" tastes terrible. Maybe I'm a sucker for buying it and thinking it would actually work?
