Taken from my Journal: Nov 10th (day 3)
So we went to Toledo today. Much cooler than Madrid I must say! We got off to a rough start (missing our train lol) and because no one speaks any english at all, and I had to rely on my 9th grade spanish to communicate we had a very difficult time trying to exchange our tickets. After a frustrating half and hour I finally just gave up and we bought new tickets for the next train. We waited in the station for another half hour and then boarded our train to Toledo. We arrived at around 1:30pm (not too bad). Mom being the inexperienced traveler that she is thought we didn't need to take any form of public transportation to get to the center of Toledo. HA! After a nice ten minutes of arguing I finally convinced her to take a bus...and guess who was right (yup..me!lol).
The bus drove us through the outskirts of town until we got to the Alcazar (the fortress on Toledo). Unfortunately for us it closed at 2pm and it was now 1:55. Needless to say we were both slightly irratated, and ammused at the same time lol. We made our way through the old streets and alley ways and found ourselves at the old gothic cathedral of Santo Tome. Mom was happy about this since she had really been wanting to see an old church. We took the typical touristy pics and then headed inside. For mom this cathedral was huge and magnificant. For me, after your inside the Vatican and St. Peters Basilica, it doesnt really get much better lol. The architecture was gorgeous (as it is in pretty much every old gothic church) and of course all the rooms were decked in gold. For me, nothing really set it apart from any other cathedral I have seen aside from the famous Greco painting that was inside and all the gold religious icons. After spending a good hour plus inside the church we went and got food at a small out door cafe. Mom went for the Piaie while I stuck with my American food lol. Too much tapas for me the night before lol. After lunch we walked around the town some more, took pictures of the scenery from the Alcazar (Toledo is built on a hill) and then eventually made our way back down to the bus stop to catch a bus to the train.
Once we got off the train we decided to get some dinner and spent a good 2 hours in the hard rock cafe. Just a note, we did not purposly choose to go to fairly american resturants while we were here, we didn't have a choice. Spanish culture does not open their resturants till well after 8pm. We left the restaurant around 10pm (just as it was starting to get busy to which mom exclaimed "this would never happen in America!" about a hundred times) and headed back to our hotel where I shortly passed out.
Tomorrow we leave eachother. Im not happy about it. : (
