We've seen so much today. We got picked up from the hotel and met Abby, our tour guide for the day. It just going to be me and Bec on the tour which is a little disappointing but it's better than a large group. We got a good picture of the pyramids as we drove past but as they are the youngest of the sites we are seeing today we are doing them last.
First we drove out to Memphis. Amazingly it was really empty. Very few tourists. I asked Abby and she said that because of all of the troubles earlier in the year the tourists got scared off. But that was good for us as people would sell us things really cheap.
I've never been all that fussed on art but that statue of Horris was beautiful. The detail was amazing. The outline of his muscles and ears and bellybutton has all lasted for thousands of years. And one solid piece of stone too.
I loved the sphinx. This one was special for two reasons. It's the only one made of alabaster rather stone and it's the only one smiling. Apparently they're all supposed to be serious looking.
After Memphis we went to Sakarra to see the step pyramid. Although it wasn't build to be a pyramid. We got to ride a camel. Bec was thrilled. It was great. Got some really good photos. From here we stopped at one of the carpet weaving schools and of course I got one. Just a small one though. I was tossed up between a few I liked but was just put off by the size of them when he pulled out this green one and I knew immediately I had to get it.
I liked being out of the city. Occasionally you'll see people riding donkeys or horses and once even a camel just being ridden through the streets. The cars are crazy. You'd never seen them on our streets. Van doors are wide open or off entirely. Loads are pile up precariously. People will cut in anywhere they can but most are really considerate about letting you in. Motorcyclist have no helmets. That one made me shake my head. Ah our silly provincial safety regulations.
After lunch we headed to the pyramids of Giza. I hadn't even realized there were three pyramids. I think I got some really good pictures but by this time the heat was really starting to get to us. There were a lot more people here than at the other places. The last places we went was a papris museum which had some beautiful pictures and a jeweler.
Then it's back to the hotel for a rest. It's amazing how much water I've drunk today. The heat really takes it out of you. Bec's asleep at the moment, she's not feeling wonderful. I'll wake her up in a bit so she can write in her diary.
