Sarah and Nicola Matthews' Travels
Hi,
Well we had an amazing few days in Koh Phi Phi. It really was amazingly gorgeous and the place we were staying was right on the beach. It had a pool which we definitely made the most of. The breakfast wasn't that great but the fact that we got to have it at the outside restaurant overlooking the whole bay definitely made up for it - the view was breathtaking!
While we were on Phi Phi we did a boat trip around the island and around Phi Phi Ley which is the other side of the island. We didn't get to stop at the place where they filmed 'The Beach' unfortunately as the current was too strong but we did some amazing snorkelling. The snorkelling was really good and the water was really really clear. We snorkelled in about 4 different places which was great and we saw loads of colourful fish. My highlight was definitely finally finding Nemo! Saw about 3 Nemos swimming away in their little corally home! We made a stop at Bamboo beach which was gorgeous but unfortunatley it was a bit rainy at that point. Then we stopped at ' Monkey Island'. We thought it was just a name and didn't mean much but there were loads of little monkeys all over the beach. We decided to Kayak to the shore as we had done lots of swimming that day. We parked our little kayak on the beach and started taking pics of the monkeys - i even managed to stand close enough to get my pic taken with them, very brave! They were very cute - at first! Then i noticed our paddle was about to get swept out to sea so i went running back to our kayak to retrieve it - only to find that I had a monkey in hot pursuit! I panicked and took to the sea while about 10 monkeys invaded our kayak! I decided to do my David Bailey directing impression and ordered Caroline to go and stand by the Kayak so I could get a pic with her and the monkeys - big mistake! One bared its teeth at her and took a flying leap off the kayak in her direction! Understandedly Caroline was slightly freaked out so joined me in my cowering in the sea position! Not feeling brave enough to rescue our under siege Kayak we pursuaded on of the deck hands to do the gentlemenly thing and then paddled away as fast as our shaking arms could take us!
The night life in Phi Phi was good and we were hugely entertained by the fire shows all the bars had on every night. This involved people people twirling around sticks with fire at the end or chains with fire at the end. Some of the people doing the show were kids that were no more than about 10 but it was very impressive!
We were sad to leave Phi Phi to go to Koh Phan Ngan. We were even more sorry after the 12 hours it took us to get to Koh Phan Ngan despite it being a fairly small distance. We had booked a trip through a travel agent and it seemed quite straightforward - but this is Thailand and journeys are always more complicated than necessary! We got a ferry then had to wait 1 1.5 hours. Then we got a sweaty bus for another few hours. Then we inexplicably got dumped somewhere for a few hours. Then we had another hour bus journey that luckily we got seats but 50% of people had to stand in the aisles. We then had to wait ages for a ferry that was an absolute rust bucket and was carrying about 3 times as many people as it should. We then got a taxi to where we were staying that then dumped us somewhere else and we had to get another taxi! so all in all it was random and long! We were so glad to get to our accomodation and check in so we could relax. We had had trouble booking somewhere as it is the full moon party on the 12th so everywhere is chocka. Our accomodation turned out to be a cockroach infested hell! The sheets didn't look like they had ever been washed, the door had big holes in it and at last count we have had 10 cockroaches - we now have a broom handy for anymore outbreaks! We tried to move today but everywhere is either full or no better so it looks like we are stuck! But fingers crossed we have had no cockroaches today and they have changes our minging sheets!
Negativety out the way, Phan Ngan seems really cool. We went out for a bit yesterday after our nightmare journey and it definitely put a smile back on our face. Everywhere is packed and people are just dancing all over the beach and atmosphere seems really cool. We have also arranged to meet people we have met on our travels and people we know from home here so all in all it should be a good few days.
Also, as we are trying to spend as little time in our room as poss we have managed to find a plush resort that lets you use its pool for free so we have been living the highlife today and pretending we are staying there!
