Sarah and Nicola Matthews' Travels
Hey,
We have arrived in Thailand now and are staying in Bangkok at the mo. Thailand is our last big stop before we go home and we cant believe time has gone so quickly and we are already here! We'll be home in just over 5 weeks, looking for jobs and getting back to reality!
But for the moment we are still travelling and loving every minute!
Bangkok is a bit of a culture shock as it is really really busy, a bit smelly and loud but it is so cool and we love it so far!
We are staying in a hotel which is just great, we decided to treat ourselves because we knew Bangkok would be really sweaty so we wanted somewhere with a pool and aircon. It is also really well located right next to the Kao San road which is the main backpacker area. The hotel is not the best but it is cheap and it is nice to have a room to ourselves and we have already had a few refreshing dips in the pool!
We spent most of our first day planning our stay in Thailand and wandering up and down the Kao San road which is so much fun. It has hundreds of market stalls selling mega cheap clothes and jewellery so far i've splashed out on a few tops, a couple of pairs of flipflops, a skirt, beads and some hair bands all of which have cost me the combined total of 10 pounds! I'm definitley going to have to get a new bag before I leave Thailand! We have also been having mega cheap meals off the streets vendors which is good as our meals are costing us about 20p each!
Today we got up nice and early to go to the floating markets. The floating markets are about 2 hours out of Bangkok so we got to experience the scary Thai driving where being in a lane is optional! When we got to the town where the markets where we got a long boat to the actual markets - these are like the boats that James Bond rode in in 'The Man with the Golden Gun' for any fans out there (coincedently we watched the film last night so we were impressed!). The boats were ridiculously low in the water so we were convinced we were going to get soaked as we went bombing along trying to avoid other boats but we were ok.
The actual floating markets were really cool. We got another boat amongst the markets which was paddled by someone which was lucky because with the amount of boat traffic there was I wouldn't have fancied braving it ourselves! The floating market was so cool, I loved it! There were loads of different stalls in boats and as you paddled along you just bought what you wanted. We did manage to resist buying any of the general tat that was on offer - it was definitely something to do more for the experience than the shopping. Although I had to try hard to resist buying the hand fan that turned in to a hat - Caroline pointed out it looked hideous and I would never wear it but it was still strangely cool not to mention handy!
