So the flight was a good choice, super easy and landed in the capital, Vientiane, within an hour. Got my visa on arrival and was already taken back with how friendly everyone is. Normally people sat at passport control are right miserable, but these guys were so smiley. A very nice welcome to the country.
Dropped off at the hostel, umm the hostel. Maybe the worse one I've been in. 50 people sharing two toilets, one of which is broke, not ideal. But it's in a great location. Was late by the time I'd sorted myself out, so just went to dinner with some people from my dorm and went to bed.
Spent my first full day in a really cute cafe called Comma cafe, sorting my life out and deciding what I want to do here. It's took me while as I'd been playing with the idea of heading south, but I've been moving round so much I decided to stay here for while, before heading to Vang Vieng for my birthday.
It's actually been a great few days, and it's been nice taking it slow. Vientiane is by far the quietest, most chilled out capital ever. It's very nice though, set right by the Mekong River, where I've had the time to have a couple of runs along. Very different to Vietnam, there's hardly any motorbikes and there's tuk tuks again. The tuk tuks are really funky here. I've spent my time walking round the street, sitting in cafés, reading and just enjoying the gorgeous weather. Rented a bicycle out one afternoon and rode to Wat Si Saket and to the Cope Centre, which is a really cool non profit organisation, helping bomb victims. Also went to the Buddha park, walked round the night market and tried out the ultimate frisbee that I'd read about in the lonely planet, but was pretty average.
Definitely enjoyed going at a slow pace the last few days, but I'm getting a bus tomorrow morning to Vang Vieng.
Great start to Laos!!!
