Hey All!
Okay so I kind of forgot a very important detail of our Fiji trip.... the part where we spent the day waiting for a Tsunami!! Yeah kind of a vital detail in our story do you think?!
On the day of the horrible massive earthquake in Chillie, we awoke to the news and news of a Tsunami warning for the Pacific... including Fiji! We awoke that morning to crazy tourists panicking and ringing parents, friends and lovers to explain! Quite scary at 8am in the morning I'm not going to lie!! So we were all brought down to the bar and watched the stories about the devastating quake and after we were all brought up to speed, the Fijian Government released a statement explaining that Fiji's capital city, Suva, on the western side of the mainland was due to be hit by a Tsunami wave at 10am that morning.. by this time it was 9.15am... they were asking locals and tourists to move to highter ground... the airport was closed, all boats to the islands were cancelled for the day and all public transport suspended...
So we spent the morning literally watching and waiting... watching the live feed from Hawaii where we were convinced we were going to actually watch the waves hit the poor city... thankfully it never came... and when the small waves reached the country, it thankfully only caused small amounts of damange to property and land. And I am extremely thankfully to say it was the same for Fiji and other Pacific countries. Waves reached Suva and the Yasawa Islands (where we were island hopping 2 weeks previous) but thankfully damage was kept to a minimum, only reporting bridges and localised land was damaged but no people were hurt... woooo! So after we spent the day watching and waiting, we finally heard good news at around 5pm- the Tsunami warning were suspended and we all jumped in the pool and celebrated with the locals :) It was pretty scary but the Fijian people were so calm and organised throughout, they were fantastic in every way that day :)
So yeah other than that Fiji was everything I talked about in the previous blog! :)
So anyways enough about Fiji.... We spent our first few days of OZ in Sydney! A beautiful ultra modern city full of life, colour and people! Honestly to come from Fiji where I'd actually got quite used to living in a hut in a island with 5 other people, 5 hours away from an actual society!.... walking into Sydney I felt like an ant! With it's tall skyscrappers, glass buildings and millions of people, it's no wonder I got lost twice when I wandered away from my hostel!! Anyways after an emotional reunion with Faye we spent our few days here on the red open top sightseeing bus, that took us around all the best bits of Sydney! The Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, The Rocks (old Sydney), Kings Cross shopping, and Bondi Beach :) We loved the sightseeing and spent the sunny afternoons on the beaches and even got a ferry over to Manly to explore the other side of the harbour! Great views of the bridge! Thanks Dad :O)
We met up with some friends I'd met in Fiji for a few nights and enjoyed Sydney's great aray of foods and drinks.. some mega expensive I may add! Who said travelling was cheap when you come to a place like Sydney?! We also really want to see the Blue Mountains but hopefully we will have enough time and money to do this when we come back to Sydney before we fly back to England!
So on Wednesday we caught a cheap Virgin Blue domestic flight to Melbourne for $40- about 30 pounds! Considering the other option was a 13 hour bus journey for $60 we figured we did quite well there! Especially as the flight only took just over an hour!!
So we're currently in Melbourne, Victoria, which is a beautiful young cosmopolitan city, filled with individual one off cafes, book shops, restaurants, and cake shops! Oh my god the cake shops!! They are amazing! We took some pictures- take a look! Every type of cake, bun and pastry you could imagine! We've spent our time enjoying the beach, wandering through St Kilda which is the area we are staying in and visiting the Neighbours set!! Yes you heard! Check out pictures with Dr Karl Kennedy! I love him! He was so friendly :) We checked out the sets and Ramsey Street itself! Well worth the trip to Melbourne!! We plan to check out the city centre by tram tomorrow before meeting some more of my friends I met in Fiji who live here, then we head on an early morning flight to Newcastle!.... Newcastle Austrailia! Yes yes I will indeed get some pictures for all of you in my big Northern family :) After a few days in Newcastle we start our adventure north, through the East Coast of Australia, one of the most popular routes taken by tourists throughout the country, and after everything we've heard... we can certianly see why :)
Catch up soon :) Miss u all millions xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
