Arrived in Hong Kong after a very comfortable 12 hour BA flight, BA really are top notch, wouldnt expect any less from BRITISH Airways!! ;) Within about an hour of taking off, I had adopted 'the Gollance position' (head against window, asleep, mouth open, heavy breathing, standard) and slept for most of the journey!
Landed at the airport feeling fresh and revived and looking out the window I developed a real sense of excitement, I think it was probably at that point when it actually hit me that I was moving abroad!! After a train and a bus, I made it to ''Mirador Mansions''... like no place on earth... less of a mansion, more of a ramshackle/hell hole/death trap. Awesome! It was 18 floors high, full of hostels on all floors as well as homes for immigrant workers and I guess poor people! Turned out not to be so bad and within minutes of arriving at the hostel I got chatting to a few people and arranged drinks for that night!
Had a quick walk around the city and suddenly felt back in my element! Hong Kong is a crazy place, hot, humid, smoggy but full of energy, big flashing neon lights, the constant sound of 'you want copy watch madame, copy handbag, we do all designer', grrr... annoying after the billionth time!
Later on me and my 'new friends', (Paul a German, Mika a German girl, Tom a Finnish and his brother and girlfriend) decided to hit the bars and went over to the island where we came across a 'strip' of bars and nightlife. It felt almost the same as the strips in Magaluf or Benidorm..... bars open onto the street, people flooding out of them, music blaring etc etc. It was a good laugh and showed the blend of the English and Chinese cultures. A lot of the people boozing were the ex-pat community, bankers, laywers dressed in their shirts and suit trousers, slicked back hair, girls in dresses, pashminas and pearl earrings... very much a corporate crowd. There was also a large number of Chinese people having adopted the western love of boozing and it made me laugh when on our way to another club there were chinese youngsters passed out on the road or sitting on the curb, head between legs with friends patting their back to help with any sickness!!! Ahhh reminded me of home!
Had an awesome night and got back to the hostel around 4ish.
