CHIANG MAI We arrive in Chiang Mai a little worse for wear after our long journey out of Laos so we catch up on a little sleep before we set out to have a look around this very historic city. We are a little surprised at Chiang Mai as we were both expecting it to look very ancient - a walled city with monks everywhere - and while there is a lot of history here and loads of monks too, the city on first glance appears to be a modern Thai city, with the usual amounts of traffic, bars, prostitutes, tourists and noise. We visit the night markets which are spectacular, selling everything you could imagine - you name it you can get it in Thailand. Sarah buys her replacement Birkenstocks (A Vang Vieng casualty) and we eat the customary traveller / Thai meal of Pad Thai, delicious!! As with Luang Prabang unfortunately we don't really have enough time to do the place justice and explore it fully, as a lot of the draw of this place are the treks into the hills and the surrounding national park areas which we will have to miss out on this time. We really enjoy our few days here though, just wandering around the sights and relaxing. We even manage to pick up a new digital camera (another Vang Vieng casualty) so all back on for the photos which is great. We catch the overnight bus back down to Bangkok, which was a bit of a 'mare given that it is 2 hours late and they decide not to bother allocating seats! Still, after the free-for-all for the seats we recline and relax in preparation for our second visit to the Crazy City...
