LUANG PRABANG We finally arrive in LP and have to sort out somewhere to stay, which is easier said than done as it is not quite the metropolis we thought it might be given that it is the cultural and tourism epicentre of Laos, but a very very sleepy town (we should have known better this is Laos afterall!). So although there are lots of guesthouses none of them seem to have any vacancies and we all end up running around trying to secure a room. We get one, thanks to our mate Guy, that is OK although we discover that night that there is a stupid cockerel out back that won't stop crowing during the night - all night - so no R&R for us in LP which is what is supposed to be all about. Due to overstaying in Vang Vieng we only have a day and a half here which is nowhere near long enough, as a UNESCO heritage sight the City has so many beautiful temples and historical building to see. We manage to visit the former palace and take in a really good art exhibition plus we climb up to take in the view from the temple high on the hill above the town, but we don't even begin to take in the sights surrounding Luang Prabang of which there are many... probably just as well though as we are cameraless thanks to Sarah dropping it in Vang Vieng! Some of our precious time is also spent checking out the boat we will spend the next 2 days on sailing up the Mekong to the Thai border... as we have heard very mixed reports from complete nightmare horror stories to accounts of beautiful scenic journeys that have been the highlight of people's trip (our actual experience is somewhere in between, but more on that later). We have travelled up with a few of the guys from Vang Vieng so we all eat together at the night food market which is a real experience. Sarah is kind of regretting the fact that we have spent so much in Vang Vieng as there is a brilliant street market here selling some really beautiful hand made things. All in all we decide we will have to come back* to LP and some time soon, as there is so much to see here and we have not had time to even scratch the surface unfortunately. *would just add here that the next time we visit LP we will be flying in and out again - see 'The Trip up the Mekong'
