PHNOM PENHAfter Siem Reap we take the bus down to Phnom Penh which is the capital and also the main place to learn about the horrific tragedies associated with Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge regime, so our mood is a little sombre on arrival. We only have a day and a half here as our itinerary is tight - the date is the 22nd December and we plan to spend Christmas at the beach - therefore Phnom Penh is going to have to be a bit of whistle-stop tour. We hire a tuk tuk and this takes us out to the killing fields and the S-21 museum, which was a notorious prison where people were sent before being taken to the killing fields. Grizzly sights and pretty hard to take, particularly the photographs of many of the inmates which are up on the walls, very harrowing - but obviously something which we felt we really had to see whilst we were visiting the country. To lighten our mood, we spend the early evening exploring the surrounds of the Royal palace and the cafe bars along the riverfront, a world away from what we have seen and read about earlier in the day. To get ourselves in the Christmas spirit we buy a Christmas tree and lights and a few silly gifts for each other... Mark is already fretting about his Christmas dinner so you know that the countdown to Christmas has begun! Oh and finally, we have to mention the accommodation - our own personal mini-tragedy - $18 to stay in the wrong part of town in what we think is a knocking-shop, room by the hour anyone?!!!
