We had an adventurous last week on the South Island. We started with a boat cruise around Milford Sound Fiordland where the scenery was stunning, amazing mountians and valleys carved out by glaciers thousands of years ago. Next we did a 15,000ft skydive over Lake Wanaka and the surrounding snow-capped mountains of the Southern Alps. Freefalling for a minute at 120mph over what we think is the most amazing scenery in the world! Next we were venturing out onto the ice of the Franz Josef glacier with a 9 hour, 12km trek up into the depths of the pure blue ice of the glacier. Kitted out with our ice talons and ice axes we even managed to crawl through ice tunnels and explore numerous ice caves! Next stop was Kaikoura, where we went whale watching. We managed to spot a sperm whale as he emerged from the depths of the ocean, a pod of orcas (killer whales), dusky dolphins and lots of NZ fur seals. Unbelievable. Our last stop on the south island was Abel Tasman National Park where we explored the bush and waterfalls using a number of high rope bridges. We've had an amazing time on the South Island but we're looking forward to what the North has to offer!
