Koh Samui
Leaving the beautiful island of Koh Chang was very difficult, but it's not such a hardship when you are heading towards Koh Samui! The journey is a long way though and therefore we had to do it in 2 parts; part 1 was Koh Chang to Bangkok, and part 2 was Bangkok to Koh Samui with and overnight stay in Bangkok. We literally arrived in Bangkok at 7pm after a full day on a bus and then checked straight in to a hotel (which we'd seen when in bangkok previously), we ate and then slept for a couple of hours before getting up at 4.30am to get our bus/boat down to Koh Samui.
Being the wisened and chilled out travellers we had become at this point we hadn't bothered to book any accommodation in advance so we went to a tourist information point when we got off the boat at Koh Samui and got the name of a place that looked very nice from there. We had already decided to stay on one of the quietest beaches on the island as we had heard reports from friends that the island is very tacky in the busy areas. To say that we landed on our feet again was an understatement...it was a lovely resort with a swimming pool 5 metres from the quiet, white-sandy-and-clear-water beach, with a restaurant which overlooked the beach. We had a wooden chalet here which was basic and just had a fan rather than air-con, but with our own bathoom and balcony from which you could see the sea (the balcony not the bathroom). All this for GBP8 per night (for both of us).
We would like to say that we trundled off exploring the whole island and seeing other parts of it....but we didn't. We spent our 5 days here simply having a little (lot) rest and relaxation - Jo had been quite ill so it was definately needed and we soon realised that we simply had the best spot on the island so there was no need to go anywhere else! Breakfast overlooking the beach, sunbathing, lunch overlooking the beach, swimming in the pool/sea, walking to a different restaurant overlooking the beach for dinner...it's a hard life. The resort only had a handful of guests staying as it is low season, including someone who owned their chalet to go with the houses they also have in Marbella and Mauritius, as they informed us (for reference this couple looked like the old woman from "Benidorm" and the guy looked like Goldmember from "Austin Powers - Goldmember")!! Although saying this, we did manage a trip to the local Tesco lotus where I bought a new camera to replace mine which had broken back in Vietnam - it was an absolute bargain. Whilst I was trying to get us free holidays in Mauritius, Jo was befriending 3 local dogs who hung around our hotel. They were very gentle natured dogs who just wanted someone to play with and they took to Jo so much that they protectively walked us to the top of our lane whenever we did manage to leave to hotel - although they were not able to protect us from a falling coconut which fell at least 20ft from a tall palm tree and landed on the tarmac about 2 metres behing us (in the pitch black) - I can only imagine what we looked like as we shot in the air whilst turning round, screaming and weilding a touch violently at the fallen fruit!!
Despite reports that we wouldn't like Koh Samui we managed to find a beach and hotel which suited our needs perfectly and I would recommed this place to anyone who is going to the island. We were also blessed by the weather.
