After the last blog, we went out for Vietnamese dinner in Hue and they had musicians there. One of the musicians was playing teacups very skillfully (hard to explain without a picture though!) When we got home, we watched Independence Day with subtitles. The next day wasn't great weather, and I tried to go to some museums, but they were closed which was a shame. And then I got really sick that evening and vommed most of the night, so overall it wasn't a great day. The next morning we arose at 6:30 to catch our train, which was delayed and took 12 hours!
We arrived back in Hanoi and grabbed some food at our favourite cafe. The next morning, we had to wake up early again and got on a bus to Halong Bay. We met our group who we would be sharing a boat with for 2 days. The weather was SO SUNNY and we were expecting rain, so this made us very happy. There were ten of us on the junk boat: 2 kiwi girls, a young german couple, a vegetarian couple from scotland/staffordshire, an english guy and an english lady who lived in cananda. we were taken in traditional rowing boats (and had to wear silly hats). we visited a fishing village, including the school there. it is a very different style of life to the uk: they leave school at a very young age and begin fishing. there are a lot of oyster farms there too. its a really pretty place there, and as i said we were very lucky with the weather as it's rainy season at the moment. in the evening, we watched the sunset on deck, and ate a very lavish meal. we vegetarians were put on a separate table to the meat eaters: the vegetarian options were sort of strange though: ornately presented plates of chips and other strange things! the seafood was fantastic. way too much food though: we completely overindulged! but to be fair a lot of it was fruit!
the next day, some of the group went off on a different boat. 6 of us went kayaking around halong bay. the scenery was spectacular: we went to a pretty spot in a lagoon and explored. jess did the steering as i'm inept at that sort of thing! had another HUGE meal on the boat and did a bit more kayaking. in the afternoon, we came to the sunrise resort on catba island: it is SO POSH - massive room with a sea view and again food was amazing and way too much of it (huge buffet breakfast! yum!)
so basically now we're really fat! and heading back to hanoi tonight
