After an uneventful two hour flight from Gatwick I arrived into Albania's capital Tirana.
During the thirty minute taxi ride to my hotel I learnt that the white road markings are purely there for decoration, as are the traffic lights and road signs. I was therefore extremely grateful when the yellow cab, screeched to a halt and I was able to free myself from the craziness. I shakily grabbed my bags and made my way to the reception of the Hotel Select.
After a swift check in I dumped my bags and was ready to explore. My hotel was a 15 minute walk from Sheshi Skenderberg Square. The square was reopened just seven days ago with huge celebrations. Whilst a square has stood in the centre of Tirana for centuries it had changed considerably over time. It seems that whenever an election is called the political party in charge announces a huge refurbishment or upgrade programme to the Square in order to gain votes. Who knew such underhand tactics took place in politics!
The Square houses the National History Museum, the National Ballet & Opera House, the Clock Tower and Mosque. As the temperature was in the low 30's I decided to head inside the History Museum. Sadly it wasn't air-conditioned (I can't really count a lady on each floor fanning you with a small fan as you walk by as air conditioning) but it was a really interesting and informative museum.
From the museum I wandered through the Square and back to my hotel. On the way back I tried, and failed, to find a restaurant where I could understand what was on the menu. After visiting three restaurants I admitted defeat and settled for a freshly made chicken and mushroom pizza for just £2.

Doug Sarah you and taxis are not a good combination! Looking forward to reading more about what I'm sure will be a memorable experience.
John And I'll second that. Enjoy it all. As it happens I'll be in that general part of the world next month myself, all going well, doing a bit of hiking, so I'll keep my eyes peeled for any tips. Cheers.
Sarah John you are going to have a ball. The hiking here is amazing. Stunning scenery.
