So,
Marie-Lisa and I met on our first night and realised we were going to the same place on the same day and decided instead of stalking each other round Cambodia, it would be best to get the bus together. I now have a little travelling friend, she is from Washington and really nice. We can talk for ages about books and films and its nice to have someone around who likes the same kind of stuff as me.
We were in Kampot and in our room by lunchtime. Getting off the bus in Kampot was quite a job and I was surrounded by guys trying to get me to stay at this hostel or do that tour yadda yadda yadda. I was trying to bend down and get my back and all they all bent down and were still trying to talk to me. I literally had to get them to step back because I couldn't get my bag on they were that close. Jeez Louise but it was quite funny and we ended up laughing about it. We sat down for a drink and they still would not go away. ML and I just laughed about it and continued to ignore them until we were ready. We had a tuk tuk driver called Freedom which was unusual. So far, my rooms here have been a lot cheaper than in Thailand for the same time of room and my money is stretching a little further in Cambodia.
Once we had settled in we headed over to a place called Bohi Villa. They are on the river and have a big veranda that stretches out and you can just chill out. Its really peaceful and we spent the whole afternoon relaxing and watching people go by on the river. That night after we had dinner, we found that the inside of our room was hotter than outside our room. Ah well, you get used to and eventually in the night the room cooled. I just find when things aren't quite right I just shrug it off. I have definitely started to embrace the chilled out lifestyle in Asia.
The next day was a busy one, we had booked ourselves on a tour to spend the day in Kep a nearby place in the Kampot Province. There really isn't a lot in Kampot which is why it's a great place to come and chill for a couple of days. Kep is the same- very relaxing indeed. We started our day by heading to a salt field where the locals are busy pushing salt from one side of the plot to the other. The plots are about the size of a swimming pool and where they had the rainy season they have a lot of water that resides on top. They push this from one side of the other raking it into piles that are then collected and stored in a big wooden hut. The pile of salt is HUGE!!
Next we went to a pepper farm. Kampot pepper is famous around the world. I wanted to bring some home but could imagine how it might have looked going through customs. After this we went to see some caves/bats and then we headed into Kep town and went to the crab market. Seafood is meant to be excellent in this part of Cambodia but I didn't get a chance to try because of the time. When you looked out to sea you could see lots of crabs cages full to the brim and they were being cooked right in front of you. After spending some time wandering around the market we then got on a boat go over to Rabbit Island. The island is cool and we just got to chill out on the beach for a couple of hours lying on huge bamboo beds that are high up. This means you can still lie in the same spot even when the tide is in.
Now we all thought the tour ended here but our tour guide had other ideas and then took us to a cave temple and out to a local family to have Palm rice wine. Its a little bit like fizzy mulled wine- a bit weird but ok. I saw the most beautiful sunset on the drive back. The sky has amazing shades of oranges and red.At one point the whole sky was pink and everywhere you looked had a pink gleam to it. By the time the first glass of palm wine was drunk I wanted to get back as it was dark by now and I was being eaten alive. I didn't think we would be out this long so didn't bring the bug spray, always a mistake. :(. I think our leader ended up a tad drunk as the wine was strong and he was knocking it back. He kept talking bless him and wanted us all to go party with him. He was a little odd but quite sweet but by then I think we all were hungry and wanted to get back. It was fun day and I got to see a lot. Normally I would have done it all myself but I don't have a lot of time here and wanted to pack it all in. Tomorrow ML and I head to Sinaokville (i can't spell it) to hang on the beach for a couple of days.
P.S - have been trying to post this blog for a while but the internet is quite bad here, Sorry.
