Day 5: Home again
A slow and lazy start to the day after we both woke at 3:30 and went back to sleep. Since this point I was supporting a really healthy headache and a sore jaw on one side. With some hammock troubles of my own I dozed through to 7:30 and Sarah till 8:10 (after a 6am read).
The five day trek really did allow for a more relaxed and enjoyable time in the jungle, just time to take it all in.
We headed off back up hills wearing dry clothes but wet socks and shoes. don't worry, we broke into a sweat within minutes. It was the usual up and less up, up.
Today we also had a small section of flat with a huge downhill to bring us to our final natural pools. This section was really hard for me as my head and body got worse and worse.
When we made it down to the natural pools we had met up with the people doing the four day trek who had started a day later so we all jumped off the rocks and into the pools together. It was just so relieving to get out of a soaked shirt and shoes and jump into some fresh, cold water. In and out and in and out until we had to leave for lunch.
The final stretch had a few river crossings that we had forgotten about from day one. The worst part was they made it impossible to get through all three of them without getting wet. The first one was fine but the latter two I took my shoes off and crossed..... and then turned around and carried Sarah over too.
We made it in time to sit and have a beer while we waited for lunch to come around, taking off the boots and outer layer of filth to dry.
We said our goodbyes to to our guides, Gabriel and Jose and piled into a beat up 4WD. Seat belts? The very uncharismatic driver explained they were only for the city. He grumbled abit and we headed away. He asked us our hotels while speaking very fast and he had trouble hearing where we were going. I'm sure it will work out.
We then wound our way down, out of the mountains and back to a main road. There was more traffic on this road than we expected. Coming the other way we had mainly motorbikes and horses and going our way were a collection of animals, including two pigs.
We arrived in Santa Marta where we were dropped back to our hostel. we spent the rest of the day relaxing watching movies in the movie room, as I got sicker and sicker leading into the night.
