I had a bit of a lie in - didn't realise how tired I was from my night bus - before walking into town to meet Jenny for lunch. I browsed some of the market stalls and then we headed to lonely planet's top choice restaurant for a bite to eat.
At 3pm we headed on a tour of the nearby Valle de la Luna (moon valley). The three others from my hostel that we'd been drinking with the night before, Ryan, Lena and Ketz, were also on the same tour. We drove out of town and our first stop was at Valle de Muerte (Death valley). We walked for 10-15mins to get to a view down into the valley. It consisted of reddy-orange coloured peaks and looked like something from Mars.
Our next stop was some salt caves. Here we followed our guide through a large gulley in the rocks and it gradually became a cave which got smaller and smaller until parts of it we had to crouch through. Luckily I happened to have my headtorch in my rucksack, which came in handy.
After the salt caves we drove to "The three Marias", a rock formation formed by water and wind erosion that looks like three Marys praying to the Lord. There was also another rock formation that looked just like a pacman with his mouth open.
The sun was getting lower in the sky so we quickly made our way to the "large dune", a sandune that we climbed to watch sunset. From on top of this there was a view of the whole moon valley and the mountains and volcano beyond. As the sun went down the colors constantly changed from reds to oranges, to greens, blues and purples. It was beautiful.
Before the tour left San Pedro I had bumped into Jess (American girl who I met on Easter Island). She asked if I wanted to meet for a drink after the tour. So, at 8pm I met her in the main square and Jenny and my friends from the hostel came too. We found a bar/restaurant with a happy hour on pisco sours so we camped out there for a while. After a few piscos I think due to the increased altitude we were all feeling a bit tipsy! Jess (intelligently) headed home after the restaurant but we (not so intelligently) decided we hadn't had enough and headed to the one actual bar in San Pedro. By the time they closed at midnight we were all very merry! We headed back to the hostel and Ryan and I randomly ended up being invited into a poker game with the Chilean next door neighbours. Seemed like a great idea in my tipsy state until I remembered I can't play poker...
