Olinda to Maceio
We'd decided to save the pennies and instead of getting a taxi to the bus station to catch our bus to Maceio, we made our way there on public transport instead. This would involve a local bus to Recife train station where we would catch a train to the out of town bus station.
When the local bus arrived it was already full but we somehow managed to squeeze on with our big rucksacks and wedge ourselves in the aisle. We were too big to fit through the front door of the bus where the turnstile is to buy your ticket so we got on via the back door and managed to get a free bus ride to the metro. Only downside was the stifling heat and the traffic. We must have spent an hour standing in the aisle of the bus with our bags - at one point I thought I was going to faint. A kind Brazilian man asked where we were going and said he was headed that way too and would show us where to get off. We followed him and after asking another Brazilian man for directions we were on the train heading to the bus station. We bought some snacks for the bus and were soon on our way south down the coast to Maceio.
Five hours later we pulled into Maceio bus station and got a taxi to the hotel. Before it got dark we walked around to explore our new surroundings. We were close to the beach so headed there. There was a walking and cycling path running north and south along the coast and it was jampacked with people jogging and exercising, playing volleyball and another bat and ball game. There were lots of food stalls so we grabbed another dinner of, you guessed it, tapioca (!) and watched the sun go down, ready to explore Maceio properly the next day.
