Three nights in Salzburg, and the first day that we get to see the Alps is the last morning.
As the train ride from Vienna was several hours long, we didn't make it to Salzburg until the sun had gone down. We still walked around the town to check things out, and ended up eating the best Italian food we had had the entire trip. The next morning, we got up around 5am to catch the 6am train back to Vienna to see the Spanish Riding School Training session. But before we made it even to the train station, we saw one of the funniest sights of the entire trip... a crowd of late 20s to middle aged adults drunk and wearing lederhosen.
It was pretty awesome to get to see the Lipizzans practicing, learning the moves that hone them into super-horse athletes. We then wandered through the school's museum, and then took the train back to Salzburg, once again arriving after dark.
Yesterday, we wandered around the town, looking into the churches, managing to catch a traveling high school choir performance (they were from the States, from a Walton High). We went up to see part of the city defenses, and then went to find a grocery, only to discover that everything in the city closed down on Sunday, excepting places like McDonald's and a nearby gas station, where we got lunch and dinner. We thawed out in the hotel room for a while, and then went out once more to see if the Christmas market was open yet... which it wasn't.
Finally, this morning, the skies were clear, and we got our long anticipated look at the Alps, finding that we even had a marvelous view of them from our hotel window. We went down to the train station to stow our bags. I had managed to be pretty good the whole trip, and had avoided injuring myself as frequently as I normally do. Hhowever on this last whole day in Europe, Murphey had my number, and I ended up falling out of the bus with all of my things, including my big pack on my back, and several other, smaller bags. I managed to skin one knee, and bang the tops of both ankles on the curb, scaring the bus driver and surrounding crowd to death in the process.
After I recovered, we headed back into the city, eager to see it in full daylight. We walked up through the city, ending at the convent which Maria Trapp was from. The convent is perched on top of a hill, and has a stunning view of the Alps. We walked back down, and went into a couple shops before heading back to the train station to head down to Milan, where we'll fly out tomorrow to return to the states.
Though it has been an amazing trip, I must say, I'm really looking forward to being home.
