Sandra's Vacation
So...I made it.
The flight from Miami to Sao Paulo was 7 hours, which seemed a lot longer than the last time I took a 7 hour flight.
My room there was very nice, after all that traveling a hot shower and a big comfy bed was exactly what I needed, thank you again Paul and Sandy!
So...I do not like the Sao Paulo airport. I found it pretty confusing since they don't bother to announce anything in any languages besides Portugese. I would have missed my flight, but luckily I met a girl who was on the same flight as me who was fluent in English and Portuguese who helped me out, also the airport definitely runs on South American time, which was fantastic for me because I didn't even board the plane until about 15 minutes after it was supposed to have left. The flight didn't leave until about 40 minutes after it's scheduled take off time. Things definitely run slower here.
I've never felt so out of place as I did at that airport, everytime I tried to ask a staff member for help they would tell me they didn't speak English and then walk away...what customer service. Luckily I met some really nice people there and on my flight as well, I've never felt so dependent on strangers before.
It is pretty run down here...but really amazing to look at. When we were flying into Salvador I couldn't believe how huge and crowded this city is! There are just houses and buildings and people everywhere! And there is just so much to see! I can't wait to post pictures of this place...I can't even describe how much there is to look at. It's all so different from home. I have nothing to even compare it to.
The house I'm staying in is really nice, the staff doesn't really speak English, but they are very friendly and are helping us learn Portuguese. Tomorrow we're getting a tour of the city and on Monday we'll meet our program managers and learn about our placements. We don't start working at our placements until Monday.
The other volunteers all seem really nice too. They are all around my age, some of them have allready been here for 4 weeks and plan on staying another month! I can't imagine living in a foreign country that long!
There is so much to see and do here, I'm allready feeling like two weeks might not be enough time.~
I'll post more soon and next time there will be pictures!
P.S. I'm sad Brazil is out of the World Cup...no "football" parties here!
