Another great day on Inle Lake. We first went to a market which was much larger and more interesting than yesterdays. There were flowers, vegetables, meat (including ears, the tail, the hooves, and many internal parts), and chicken, as well as blacksmiths working, petrol sellers siphoning off gas into jerrycans and bottles, and people making and selling betel nut - a popular item here. There were also many interesting faces as the hill tribe people come down to this market.
From the market we travelled across the lake and up a narrow river with dense jungle on either side to a place called Indien. It is an ancient site dating back to 200 BC and now contains over 1000 stupas, some ancient and crumbling but with magnificent carvings still discernable, and some brand new and under construction. The old stupas fascinated us and once again reminded us of Angkor Wat. It was a great place to wander.
Our last stop of the day was the most amusing - the Jumping Cat Monastery. It seems that the monks here were somewhat bored and to cure their boredom trained numerous cats to jump through hoops. It was very funny to see the cats doing this. I couldn't believe that cats were trainable, but it's amazing what time and cat treats can accomplish!

Gail love the story about the cats! I trained one of my Siamese Cats to jump over my arm at waist height! With a click of my hand he took off over my arm - good party trick! btw any Burmese cats remaining or have they all interbred with moggies?
