What a great day! Today we had a horse cart and young driver who drove us around Bagan to visit more temples. Our driver was great - fun and very accommodating - even if his teeth were stained black from chewing betel nuts! We visited at least 20 sites all together. Many had death-defying stairs leading up to narrow outer walkways which were missing bricks in strategic places. However, the great views of the area made the challenges worthwhile.
For lunch we had a typical Myanmar lunch where we were presented with 14 different traditional dishes - some more palatable than others. The salt content of several of the dishes was enough to put our blood pressure over the top!
At sunset we took an 1 1/2 hour riverboat trip on the Ayerarwady River - after bargaining the price from the original 60,000 kyats down to 12,000 (about $15.00 for both of us). The boat which had room for about 20 people but carried only us, was driven by an ancient car engine that had to be hand-cranked to start it. Our driver, who horked and spat during the entire voyage - as is the custom here - took us a couple of kilometers upstream and then turned off the engine. We drifted lazily back downstream along with several other similar boats, absorbing the gorgeous sunset and view over Bagan.
