We could only get to, and from, Koh Samui via this little town. Our flight time back to Bangkok was early and so a night in Surat Thani was necessary.
Did you not know where Surat Thani is in Thailand? Neither did we. It took a little bit of research to get ourselves organized for this leg of the trip.
What makes this place very memorable was that, not only did the hotel have the biggest pool we had seen in SE Asia (you could literally hold the Olympics here), but it was the place that we did watch the closing ceremony of the 2008 Games in our retro 1970's vinyl covered lounge. All through our time in Thailand, it was difficult to get anybody to do anything when the TV was on and a Thai was competing. Not that I blame them. At the end of the Games, Thailand had secured 4 medals and had come 31st from about 70 nations! Pretty good work. Especially since South Africa only managed to secure one silver medal despite completing in a far wider range of sports - I'm regretting the additional breakfast treaty Ing & I made at the start of the Olympics. I'll literally be getting her breakfast from now until Christmas!! Ah well…..
It was a real pleasure to be on the back of tuk-tuk as we headed out to the airport the next morning. We couldn't help smiling as passersby in trucks and cars would all wave and smile enthusiastically in response to ours. It seemed that did so in genuine pleasure. It was a fantastic departure from Surat Thani and another little memory to take back with us.
