Looking out of our hotel window we can see the impressive Jantar Mantar (observatory), and all its many sun dials and other structures, very close by. It looks very similar to the one we visited in Jaipur, all made out of red stone.

We set off in the minibus, through the wide, tree-lined streets of New Delhi. This is the area built by the British between 1911 and 1931 to be the showcase of the Empire. On Independence this became the capital of the new nation and is certainly a very impressive area. There are large forest areas, many parks and gardens and lots of large and imposing buildings. It was an afternoon game starting at 3 o'clock and we weren't much looking forward to the boiling heat, especially as you aren't even allowed to take water into the stadium and there is hardly any available to buy. Anyway, at the last minute we were told that the tickets we had been given for the match, for the Old Clubhouse Stand, couldn't be used any more because the stand was closed due to a court case. Apparently the stand has been built too close to a monume...

Up early, a quick breakfast and on the road by 8am. For the first hour, through Agra and outside, it was a slow, slow journey. As always it was people of all kinds, vehicles of all sorts and animals galore, cows, monkeys, goats everywhere. Shops and street sellers all around and, sadly, the ever present piles of rubbish wherever you look.
