Indonesia "tick". Sweet times with the good and the bad. Last blog I was leaving Bali and journeying through Java. It began with a bus ride Indo style - Departure time 6.30am. 7am 4 people are on the bus. Annoucement at 7.15 and everybody else waiting in front of the bus get on.
Made the day journey to Probolinggo to find out as I get off the bus that the road to the mountain (Mt Bromo) I wanted to see had been washed out with rain. Found a hotel and then one of the staff found a private driver that said he could get me up there - part way car, part motorbike. Made a deal and got the mountain and sunrise and short hike up it in then a 9 hour trip to Yogyakarta for around US$50. Bit pricey but paid for the convenience and experience.
Yogyakarta had the temples of Borobudur and Prabanan and another sunrise start to the week. Real nice and really old. Then a beaut train trip to Jakarta - photo's of the country side while hanging out the doorway.
Jakarta was alright. 3 days were enough - meant to be 2 but missed my flight due to a few more than expected the night before and an alarm that is too fruity. Went to the zoo and saw Komodos and Orangatans and to a couple museums. Wicked ancient history but real bad history museum. Hung out with the locals and had a few good nights on the juice.
All in all - Indo seems to me as the good and the bad. Beautiful landscapes and temples mixed with piles of burning trash and slums. Hard to miss both but well worthy of a visit. I'll miss the place. Apparently there's some real good money to be made teaching English if one could only handle the constant heat.
Next stop: Malaysia.
