Chiang Mai and The Elephant Nature Park
We decided to leave Bangkok and go to Chiang Mai. Further north the weather was a bit different. It would be baking in the morning but bucket down in the afternoon.
On our third day there we wanted to go to an elephant sanctuary. We were very careful as we'd heard horror stories of elephants being chained up and beaten with pick axe handles with nails in. Eventually we went to the Elephant Nature Park. Which was opened and run by a lady called Lek (I think) she basically went around the country buying elephants that were being abused or used for tourism and took them to her park where she rehabilitated them. We went there and helped to look after them for the day. We started the day by feeding them fruit. Then in the afternoon we went in the river with 3 of them and helped to bathe them with buckets. What an experience! They were so chilled and friendly. After a final feed in the afternoon we left after watching a video showing what some of these animals had been through. Very touching stuff. Too much for some people who had to leave.
