Wednesday 20th June 2007
Hi everyone,
Well as it's been over a month since my last post I thought I'd surprise you all by writing an entry!! It's difficult to write as regularly here because I'm working and day to day not doing as much different stuff as before.
I've now been in my new house for a few weeks and I've decorated my little room with lots of pictures of you all so it's feeling a lot more like home. Thank you for the cards and letters as well it's really nice to get stuff from home.I am absolutely loving living in Queenstown, if I could ship all of you out here I'd stay forever. I'm now working in a ski hire shop in town, after 2 weeks intensive training (40 hours a week) I am definitely clued up on my skis and snowboards! We finally opened the shop last Sunday, the same time as the first mountain Coronet Peak opened and I'm really enjoying myself. Work has a really good vibe to it, although we work hard it's really good fun and everyone's really sociable. All the guys I work with are big into either skiing or snowboarding and their enthusiasm is infectious.
I'm now fully kitted out with all my snowboarding gear (it's an expensive hobby!!) and have been up the mountain 5 times in the last week. The first couple of times I went up an Aussie guy from work took me on the beginner slope and taught me the basics although I spent the majority of the time falling over. I've now progressed onto the bigger slope and have started to link turns and although I'm covered in bruises I'm not falling over quite as much. The aim is to be on the big intermediate slope by next week - very scary!! I'm really enjoying snowboarding and I'm a lot better at it than I thought I'd be. I have definitely got the mountain buzz and I think I'm going to really enjoy the season. It's also cool that there are a few of us learning, me, Rose, Hayley and Kat so we all encourage each other.
Queenstown is quite a small town which is good because it's really easy to meet people, and you know lot's of people around town straight away. There's a good group of us who hang out together now and everyone's a really good laugh. A couple of Wednesday's ago a group of us girls all went to see a show called Puppetry of the Penis - it was hilarious. Basically the show consists of two Australian guys who stand on the stage naked and make interesting shapes out of their penises, it's so funny mainly because they are both really standard, not very attractive blokes!! After the show me, Rose (Dan from works girlfriend), Lianne ( Dave from works girlfriend) and Ava met the guys from work and stayed out until about 4, not great as I had work at 9 the next morning!! Since I've started working I feel like I've hardly had a spare minute, we usually go out for drinks a few nights a week which as Laura and Hayley can testify is always a messy affair in Queenstown!! We had our first staff party last Saturday night and it was really good fun. The bosses put a tab behind the bar and we all had a class time. I went on a date with a guy from work last week against my better judgement as I don't trust men as far as I can throw them. But we had a really nice time and he's a sweet guy, although I'm being overly cautious because I really don't want to get into anything with anybody again, at least not for a long, long time!! On Saturday night I went round to his because he lives with the two guys I get on best with at work Pangus and Dan and we had a bit of a house party which was class - their's is definitely going to be party house this season. I'm working at 12 today and then I'm off out again tonight surprise surprise!! Sorry this entry is fairly short but I'm not really doing much different stuff at the moment. Winterfest (week long festival in Queenstown) kicks off on Friday which should be really good fun, and my cousin Rachel is coming out for a holiday on the 27th. I can't wait to see her, she'll love it out here and it'll be really nice to see someone from home.
I've attached a few pics of the view in Queenstown at the moment (it's stunning) and I'm going to make a definite effort to take more pictures from now on (I told you I'd be rubbish once you left Laura loo!!).
Looking forward to more messages and cards from you all and I promise I won't leave it so long between entries again!!
Lots and Lots of Love
Sam
